It's a fantastic tool for creating momentum towards the rim, catching aggressive defenses off guard, or simply creating space for the ball so a teammate can attack one-on-one. Unfortunately, it's often misused. We see a lot of players cutting without looking at the ball, hidden behind the defender, or without a direct path to the basket, forgetting the power of this technique. This is often due to the fact that they are used to repeating plays and perform the action automatically, and that's what we try to combat in our online training courses on our website. But today, we're going to talk about shallow cuts. Instead of going straight to the basket and exiting on the opposite side, it's a cut where the player enters the three-point line and crosses over to the other side. But unlike what you'd expect in a normal cut, they don't go deep; they stay close to the three-point line. So what's the point of cutting just to avoid the ball and go into the middle of traffic? It's a tactical move, decided by the coach, used either to remove stunts in front of the ball handler and open up space for them, or to disrupt defensive rotations. On defense, we prepare by knowing who's safe under the basket, who's trying to limit three-point passes, and so on, depending on the aggressiveness of our defense. With the shallow cut, you disrupt the defensive line, allowing you to catch the defense off guard. You can use it on the side, on screens in the middle, or even simply in 1v1 situations, which creates space in a way very similar to what a ghost screen does.
