Lesson 4: For July 25, 2026 SIN IN THE CHURCH Saturday, July 18 READ FOR THIS WEEK'S STUDY: 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 Corinthians 2:5-10; 1 Corinthians 6:1-13; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; 1 Corinthians 6:19-7:9 MEMORY VERSE: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Our brain is like a sponge: everything that reaches it through our senses stays with it. We may not be consciously aware of most of what enters our minds (it would be impossible to think clearly if we remembered everything), but it's all there and influences, to some degree, what we think, feel, and do. That's why we are so vulnerable to the influence of all the bad things around us. The Christian church has struggled with this problem since its inception. For example, where did Sunday observance come from? Did it originate in the church? No, it came from the surrounding culture. We can see how this principle manifested itself in Corinth. After an appeal against internal divisions (1 Cor. 1-4), Paul now turns to issues related to sexual immorality, strife, prostitution, marriage, and singleness (1 Cor. 5-7). The world's standards affected them greatly. The sectarianism described in 1 Corinthians 1-4 opened the door to the immoral behavior denounced in the following chapters.
