The Forgotten Sailors - The Agenda

During the Second World War, thousands of Chinese men came to Britain – a vital resource for the country’s Merchant Naby during the conflict. Many settled in and around Liverpool, marrying locals and starting a family. But when the conflict ended, rather than celebrating their contribution, the British Government forcibly repatriated more than a thousand men, often simply grabbing them off the streets and sending them back to a China which had changed completely while they’d been living overseas. Relatives were left shocked and confused, often with no knowledge at all as to what had happened. More than 75 years later the families of these forgotten allies are fighting for an apology, and an acknowledgement of the vital role their fathers and grandfathers played in the British war effort. In this editon of The Agenda, Juliet Mann speaks to local MP Kim Johnson who’s helping to drive their campaign, and John Belchem, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Liverpool.
