In the year 144, the church of Rome put its richest member on trial — not for a crime, but for an idea. Marcion of Sinope had concluded that the wrathful God of the Old Testament and the loving Father of Jesus could not be the same being. So he built his own Bible: one gospel, ten letters of Paul, and nothing else.
