#BrindaMukthi I "Begada" in the Veena Dhanammal Bani I A collection of recordings in the raga Begada
BrindaMukthi presents a special Begada Jukebox, tracing the journey of this beloved rakti rāga through the voices of the Veena Dhanammal lineage. Renowned for its depth, repose, and infinite scope for nuanced expression, Begada found a natural home in a tradition that prized rāga bhāva, aesthetic restraint, and the unhurried unfolding of melody. The Dhanammal bani’s intimate engagement with rakti rāgas allowed Begada to flourish in all its richness, preserving a vast repertoire of varnams, kritis, padams, and jāvalis that reveal its many shades. This curation unfolds as a complete musical mārgaṃ, moving from varṇam to śloka through compositions of diverse composers, each illuminating a different facet of the rāga. This archival curation is also offered in loving memory of Smt Vardhini Prem, granddaughter of Smt T Muktha on her remembrance day today and whose tireless archival efforts preserved many of the recordings that continue to find new life on BrindaMukthi. May this journey through Begada stand as a tribute both to a cherished rāga and to a guardian of the musical legacy that sustains it. 00:00 - Opening Credits 00:07 - Varnam - Intha Chalamu - Adi - Sri Veenai Kuppaiyer Excerpted from her set of RPM records recorded by Columbia Graphophone Company in the early 1900s. 06:23 - Kriti - Tanavari Tanamu - Adi - Sri Tyagaraja* Accompanists : Sri T Viswanathan - Flute Sri T Ranganathan - Mridangam Sri RS Gopalakrishnan - Violin Excerpted from an All India Radio Programme in the year 1958 recorded in their Madras studios. 11:44 - Kriti - Tyagarajaya Namaste - Rupaka - Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar Accompanists : Sri T Kesavalu - Violin Sri Coimbatore N Ramaswamy - Mridangam Excerpted from an All India Radio Feature on Dikshitar Kritis in the 1970s. 31:26 - Kriti - Nadopasana - Adi - Sri Tyagaraja* Excerpted from an archival project called the "Saraswati Project" by the Sampradaya Foundation in the 1980s. 43:24 - Kriti - Sankari Neeve - Rupaka - Sri Subbaraya Sastri Accompanists : Sri V Thyagarajan - Violin Sri Umayalpuram Mali - Mridangam Excerpted from a house concert of Sri T Viswanathan at the residence of Smt T Brinda in the late 1990s. 1:07:20 - Kriti - Abhimanamennadu - Adi - Patnam Sri Subramania Iyer* Accompanists : Sri RK Shriramkumar - Violin Sri Umayalpuram Mali - Mridangam Excerpted from the last concert of Smt T Muktha at the Musiri House in the year 2003. 1:14:33 - Kriti - Nee Pada Pankaja Mula - Adi - Sri Tyagaraja Accompanists : Smt Mira Sivaramakrishnan - Violin Sri Karaikudi K Jayaraman - Mridangam Excerpted from an All India Radio programme in the 1990s. 1:24:34 - Kriti - Manasuna Nera - Rupaka - Patnam Sri Subramania Iyer Accompanists : Sri RK Venkatarama Sastri - Violin Sri Guruvayur Dorai - Mridangam Excerpted from a Radio Sangeet Sammelan from Hyderabad in the year 1962. 1:42:36 - Padam - Yaala Padare - Tisra Triputa - Sri Kshetrayya Accompanists : Sri Annavarappu Ramaswami - Violin Sri Coimbatore N Ramaswami - Mridangam Excerpted from an album "Akashvani Sangeet" featuring the sisters music archived with the AIR. 1:48:45 - Padam - Yarukkagilum Bhayama - Misra Chapu - Vaidheeshwarankoil Sri Subbarama Iyer Accompanists : Smt Savitri Satyamurthy - Violin Sri Umayalpuram Mali - Mridangam Sri P Ganesh - Chitravina Excerpted from a house concert of Smt T Muktha at the residence of Sri Cleveland Sundaram which was archived by Carnatica in the form of a CD release.
