Why is Kinmen Island part of Taiwan? The History of the Island in Between Taiwan and China Kinmen belongs to Taiwan even though it is located just a few kilometers off the coast of China. In this video, I take you on a journey through the history of Kinmen. I try explain the island’s complex past. We will visit key locations from the Battle of Guningtou (1949), an important place in the Chinese Civil War that shaped the island’s fate. You will also hear the story of the the First Taiwan Strait Crises and the Second Taiwan Strait Crises. All of that was followed by to the famous “Quemoy and Matsu” quote in the Nixon–Kennedy debate. Yes, Kinmen was an issue in US politics and today you find US soldiers on the island. Along the way, we also see the best Kinmen attractions: Kinmen knives, Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor and several historical landmarks. Finally, I will show you how Kinmen transformed from a frontline defense zone into one of Taiwan’s most famous tourist destinations. Kinmen today is a place where history and peace coexist.
