We Experienced Poor Bangladeshi Hospitality in Sylhet 🇧🇩
Today's vlog is one we didn't expect to happen but did. The long story is this, we wanted to enjoy Sylhet City Centre today for the last time before we went off to explore Sylhet's nature tomorrow. So we decided to see if we could go to a local restaurant to try a famous tangy/citrus curry and see more Sylheti tourist sites. We started by visiting the great Hazrat Shahjalal Jame Mosque. Actually we had a great time here but unfortunately we had to leave due to safety concerns as we were attracting a lot of attention simply by being foreigners. However this was where we met our "friend" who basically attached himself onto Teigan and I and wanted to go for lunch. Now you have to remember how kind me and Teigan are so naturally we didn't want to say no and we simply just wanted to be polite and friendly, this was our grave mistake. We had plans to visit a restaurant called "Panshi" as it was highly rated here in Sylhet with over 18,000 reviews on Google and somewhere selling the famous curry we wanted to try. However our "friend" used the language barrier to his advantage and persuaded us to visit a different restaurant, and little to our knowledge this restaurant was a luxury rooftop restaurant. Once again, based on how he approached and spoke to us, we were under the assumption he was inviting us to lunch with him as his "guest", a gesture of the famous Bangladeshi Hospitality we have encountered before. So naturally we follow him, chatting and being friendly he takes us here, we eat, we all have a good time, we enjoy everything up until the last moment. The Bill. Without even thinking, he passes the bill to us and expects us to pay. Now again me and Teigan in any other situation would pay without second question because luckily we can and we like to be hospitable with people. We even expected to just pay our half and he will pay for himself. Even all the context leading up to this situation and the way he spoke made us think he was treating us/maybe just all pay for ourselves, he never mentioned we would be paying. Now the waiter knew something was up and the table behind knew he was up to something as-well. Off camera most of this took place as we didn't want to be rude and film him, but basically either he has done this before or somehow the restaurant recognised him because they knew he was here for the free food off our backs. Teigan spoke up to him and his tone went from a friendly kind man, to a deer in headlights. He knew he had been exposed so he came to an agreement to pay half. Now this is the worst part. He pulls his wallet out to pay his half. He doesn't even have enough to pay for his own meal. Who goes to a luxury, fancy, expensive restaurant, invites guests and recommends them to come with him, but can't even afford the meal? So we ended up paying around 3/4 of the bill. From this moment, he would not stop apologising and saying sorry. But from this moment we just wanted to leave as we left so uncomfortable, not for being with him, but the whole restaurant watching us. Teigan and I are the most quiet and polite people you will ever meet off camera and we wanted to keep the whole situation as respectful as possibly, so honestly yes we felt ashamed and guilt leaving the restaurant even though we knew it wasn't our fault. So we left, shook hands, Pablo left on a good note with him and we went our separate ways. Moral of the story for us now as unfortunate as it may sound, we won't be going to dinner with strangers ever again :( Let us know in the comments what you think and our opinions and please be honest, we won't be offended if you disagree with us.
