ESBLs and Carbapenemases (Part 2) - Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology
Among Gram-negative rods (bacteria like E. coli and non-fermenters like Pseudomonas spp.) the production of broad-spectrum beta-lactamases, enzymes which break down penicillin type drugs, is a serious threat to our ability to treat infections. There are may different types of beta-lactamases and the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases are amongst the most troubling. Organisms producing these enzymes are listed by the US CDC as some of our greatest threats to the future of antimicrobials! In this lecture I'll briefly summarize how these enzymes hydrolyze beta-lactams and how different enzyme classes vary in their hydrolytic spectrum and a high level summary of the distribution of these resistance determinants.
