I hope you had another good day. Today, we will share the Gospel meditation for the Saturday of the 12th Week in Ordinary Time. In today's Gospel, we meet a possessor of tremendous faith that could not be found even in all of Israel. Surprisingly, he was not a Jew, but a Gentile centurion from Rome. When Jesus said He would go to his house to heal his sick servant, he replied: "Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. Just say the word. For I am a man under a superior, but I have soldiers under me, so if I say to this one, 'Go,' he goes, and if I say to that one, 'Come,' he comes." How on earth could this Gentile officer have reached a level of faith that even Jesus marveled at? A great spiritual answer lies within his answer. By comparing himself to Jesus, he is deducing the laws of heaven through the laws of the world's military command structure. "Even within my chain of command, my subordinates move with a single command; how much more so for Him who rules over life, to be able to heal with a single word without even needing to come!" The centurion believed that if a law applies to everyone in the world, it would apply equally to his relationship with Christ. Reaching the laws of heaven through the laws of this world in this way—this is the most perfect path to true faith. If any law or system is perfectly established and operating in this world, it never came into being by chance. It must have been created by someone. Therefore, the desire to discover the laws of the world and apply them to oneself in one's life is the beginning of true faith, acknowledging deep within one's bones that the Creator who made those laws already exists. If there is a blueprint, it means that someone made it. A building cannot be constructed without a blueprint. The blueprint itself is a law. If a law is discovered, it means that a Creator exists. One cannot reach true faith by ignoring the obvious principles and laws of this world. That is merely the arrogance of trying to levitate and ascend to the second floor without stepping on the stairs. There is a very famous true story about someone who, while deeply exploring the laws of this world, finally met the Creator and attained perfect faith. It is the story of Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the Human Genome Project, who was the first to decipher the human DNA gene map. He was originally a thorough and staunch atheist. He believed in nothing unless there was visible scientific evidence. However, as he began to decipher the base sequences of human DNA—a staggering 3.1 billion base pairs—one by one, he was struck by a tremendous shock. This was because the genetic information within the human body was woven into a system and laws so sophisticated and perfect. As a scientist, he had no choice but to acknowledge it. "It is statistically impossible for such a perfect information system and the laws of life to be created by chance, all by itself. This system was programmed by a great intelligence—that is, the Creator!" Eventually, he broke his stubborn atheist stance and was reborn as a devout believer, later publishing a book titled The Language of God that captured his realizations. The person who sought to discover the laws of the world most fiercely eventually knelt before the providence of the One who created those laws. But what about us today? All too often, we fall into a secret spiritual elitism, thinking, "I am an exception. The laws of the world do not apply to me." Because we believe we can be exceptions to the laws of the world, even the laws of faith become invisible to us. In January 2018, a case occurred in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where a daughter who had spent nine years retaking medical school entrance exams brutally murdered her own mother and mutilated her body. The mother, tormented by an inferiority complex regarding her academic background, confiscated her daughter's cell phone for nine years, installed CCTV cameras in her room to monitor her, and even showered with her. The daughter, imprisoned in a detention center, said this, just as she had written on Twitter: "I have executed a monster. Life in the detention center is much more comfortable than when I felt like a prisoner." Why bring up such a horrific example during a sacred sermon? This is because the exact same tragedies continue to repeat themselves in various parts of the world, such as the murder of a mother by a top high school senior in Korea and the murder of a mother by a student at a prestigious university in the UK. Why do the same things keep repeating? It is precisely because of the arrogant thought, "I am different! My child is an exception!" If freedom is not granted, the mother will eventually be stabbed.
