Has Drone Technology Outgrown VLOS?

Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) has been one of the fundamental principles of drone flying for years. But modern drones are becoming increasingly advanced, with obstacle avoidance, GPS positioning, live HD video feeds, telemetry, automated return-to-home systems and situational awareness tools that simply didn't exist when many of today's drone operating principles were first developed. In this video, I explore a question that many drone pilots have probably considered at some point: Has drone technology advanced faster than the regulations and guidance that govern it? We'll look at: • What VLOS actually means • The 500 metre debate • Anti-collision strobes and visibility • The "dot in the sky" problem • Modern drone technology and obstacle avoidance systems • Whether advanced drones provide greater situational awareness than visual observation alone • How courts might view evolving technology versus established regulatory guidance This is not legal advice and is not an argument for flying beyond the regulations. Rather, it's a discussion about how rapidly drone technology is evolving and whether the assumptions behind VLOS deserve ongoing examination. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments. 00:00 - Is VLOS Outdated? 01:20 - Why VLOS Made Perfect Sense 02:22 - The "Dot in the Sky" Problem 03:18 - The 500 Metre Question 04:03 - The Strobe Question 05:18 - What Modern Drones Can See 06:52 - The Courtroom Thought Experiment 08:24 - The Safety Factor 09:16 - Conclusion: Has Thinking Changed? #Drone #DroneLaw #VLOS #DJIMavic3 #DronePilot #CAA The content on this channel includes: The entire coastline of Scotland - by drone; DJI Mavic 3 flights; DJI mini 3 Pro flights; DJI mini 2 flights; 360° tours; tutorials; how to guides, waypoints, special maneuvers, parallaxes, spiral orbits, settings, ND filters, etc also reviews of drone related products - all of this and more on the Windswept Robert YouTube channel! 🚗💨 Fuel the Next Adventure!
