Timeless Blue ✧ MakoHaru ver. [CC] English Subtitles
yeah I'm back into Free! and I'm makoharu trash don't @ me I discovered the Free! character songs a few months ago and thought I was a genius for making a makoharu duet, only to discover that two other people have already beaten me to it. This version is at least different, because I gave them each a solo verse. I also translated it! am I the first person to do this? are there seriously no other translations of this song out there? turn on CC for subs! I did my best -- I am freshly graduated as a translator and have N2 Japanese, but I am almost certain there are mistakes so I will gladly welcome any feedback from wiser people than me. (づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ ✧ TRANSLATION NOTES ✧ 繋がった水: Haru actually says ‘been drawn in to the connected water’, but it comes across a bit strange in translation, so I went for ‘connected to the water’ 絶えず道を照らして: I’m unclear on whether taezu goes with michi or with terasu, so this line could either be saying that the road has always been there, or that the light shines constantly. I feel it makes more sense for the light to be shining constantly, since the path (lights the *way*) was created that summer through their bonds. 未来を 選んだ free: correct me if I’m wrong here, but I’m taking this as ‘the free that the future chose’. I take the ‘free’ to go with this line rather than with the following どこまででも, how it appears in my translation, as musically the ‘free’ seems to stand with 未来を 選んだ, but websites with the lyrics listed put it with どこまででも or make everything the same line, so I went with the latter interpretation. 跳ねる: haneru means to spring, to jump, to prance, but ‘a relay that jumps with light etc’ sounds very weird so I chose to translate this with a water-based ‘overflowing’. 気のせいじゃない: This means ‘it’s not my imagination that~' but I felt it came off a little accusatory, so for the sake of clarity, I flipped it to be ‘it’s certain that [you give me courage]’. ✧ There is no clear subject in this song, so it could be read from the perspective of either an individual or a team. I chose to mix a bit of both. ✧ 背中 can mean many things, such as colleague, teammate, and friend. I know teammate is often used in the English sub of the anime, but there were a few places in this song that I felt friend fit better, as teammate can come across as a bit more distant. Thank you for listening and let's yell about makoharu in the comments together!
