It is decked artistically with unique metal bars to counter the skewness caused by hasty construction and is one of the two chimneys of the Van Eck coal driven Power Station, set on the northern outskirts of Windhoek. The two towers were built in the late 60s by South West Africa Water and Electrical Corporation (SWAWEK) today referred to as NamPower, with approval from the South African Government as an afterthought of the original plan recommended by the controversial Odendaal Commission. This was due to the prolonged negotiations with the Portuguese Government regarding the Ruacana Scheme, for the construction of the Calueque Dam in Angola to regulate the riverflow downstream towards the Ruacana Falls and to develop a hydro-power station for the transmission of power. The Van Eck Power Station was first commissioned in June 1972 and is named after Dr. Van Eck, who proposed the idea of the Ruacana Scheme. So, now that you know more about this distinctive leaning tower in Windhoek… we hope this construction mishap brings a smile to your face as it did too many when it was initially constructed as upon return from your Namibian adventure. --------------------------------------------------------------- Website & Newsletter • Newsletter Signup: https://www.gondwana-collection.com/n... • More Gondwana Info: https://www.gondwana-collection.com --------------------------------------------------------------- Let's Connect: • Facebook:   / gondwana.collection.namibia   • Instagram:   / gondwanalodges   --------------------------------------------------------------- Video Produced By: Prostudio.cc (Camera & Cut) • Web: https://www.prostudio.cc • Email: [email protected]
