Una de las víctimas por combates entre disidencias en Guaviare era prima de los hermanitos Mucutuy
At least 11 of the 48 bodies found in an area of the jungle department of Guaviare, Colombia, where fighting broke out last week between two dissident groups of the former FARC guerrillas, were those of minors, forensic authorities confirmed Tuesday. "The identified victims include 39 males and nine females, among whom are 11 minors," the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences said in a statement, adding that five bodies remain unidentified. The Ombudsman, Iris Marín, stated that "11 minors were killed in a battle that resembles a massacre." Amid the wave of violence, tragedy has once again struck the Mucutuy family, known worldwide for the miraculous survival of four children in the Amazon rainforest. Following the fierce clashes, authorities revealed that one of the victims is Daniela Mucutuy, a cousin of the children rescued after the 2023 plane crash. A battle that resulted in a massacre Ariel Cortés, director of the Institute of Legal Medicine, detailed the magnitude of the tragedy: “We received 48 bodies… we found 11 minors between the ages of 15 and 17, eight of whom are boys and three are girls.” The UN has demanded an immediate end to forced recruitment, urging armed groups to release all minors under 18 in their ranks. The Mucutuy family's ordeal Daniela Mucutuy, identified among the victims, was reportedly recruited approximately two years before the plane crash in which her cousins survived 40 days in the jungle. Her great-uncle, Fidencio Valencia, who lives in Bogotá, clarified the family connection amidst the grief on the radio program Mañanas Blu: “The mother of the children who went missing in the jungle is named Magdalena. Daniela’s mother is named Elda… they are cousins.” Valencia recounted that he lost track of the young woman years ago when the family moved to the Amazon. “I saw Daniela when she was 3 years old… then they went to the Amazon… she grew up there… I never saw her grow up.” The news of Daniela’s death in combat confirms the vulnerability of Indigenous communities to forced recruitment in conflict zones. Bodies The identification process has not been without additional dangers. The director of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences revealed that the work had to be temporarily suspended due to the presence of dangerous devices among the remains: “Someone arrived here with detonators, and we had to suspend the process… it put the experts inside the institution at risk.” Despite these obstacles, forensic experts have concluded that the widespread cause of death was combat, with no signs of prior torture according to initial reports, although the bodies showed multiple gunshot wounds. Currently, five bodies remain unidentified, awaiting identification by their families for genetic testing related to the struggle for territorial control in the area.
