Fusion Energy (Part II) — Prof. Steven Cowley

In many ways fusion is the perfect energy source — there is abundant fuel, the process is intrinsically safe and it produces little environmental impact. However it is enormously hard to make fusion work — although it we can do it in very large devices. I will discuss the physics that sets the scale of the devices and the constraints that arise from engineering. New experiments suggest that smaller and cheaper devices may be possible. I will review these ideas and the latest results from experiments. I suspect that there are ideas to be found that will revolutionise fusion — ideas that today’s students will develop, perhaps they will come from students at ISS.
