Richard Steele was an Irish writer, essayist, dramatist, and politician who played a significant role in the development of 18th-century English literature. Born in 1672 in Dublin, Ireland, Steele was educated at the Charterhouse School and later at Oxford University, though he left without completing his degree. He began his career in the army but soon turned to writing. Steele is best known for founding The Tatler (1709), a popular periodical that aimed to reform society by promoting moral values and polite behavior. Later, along with his close friend Joseph Addison, he started The Spectator (1711), which became one of the most influential literary journals of the 18th century. Through essays written in a simple, elegant style, Steele and Addison sought to improve manners, criticize social evils, and cultivate refined taste among readers. Steele also wrote several plays, including The Conscious Lovers, which promoted sentimental comedy. His contribution to journalism and periodical essays helped shape modern prose writing and establish the essay as a powerful literary form. 📌Playlist of History of English Literature:- • English Literature for all exams 📌English Literature MCQ:- • 5000 MCQs series of English Literature •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ✨About Me : I am Priyanka Gaur, an experienced educator who has served as a PGT English, Assistant Professor affiliated with Indraprastha University, and Vice Principal in a CBSE school. 📸 Social Media Handles : • INSTAGRAM : @priyankkaagauur / priyankkaagauur • Linkedin - / priyankkaagauur • Facebook- / priyankkaagauur •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Kindly like, share, comment, and support my YouTube channel.
