How to Prune Wisteria in Summer

My wisteria has finished flowering and has put on lots of long whippy summer growth, so I'm giving it a summer prune. In this video I show you how to prune wisteria after flowering by cutting the long shoots back to around 5 or 6 leaves, while keeping the old woody framework in place. I also explain for newer plants you can train in shoots now. I explain how this summer prune fits with the winter prune later in the year. Summer pruning helps keep wisteria under control, improves airflow, and encourages flowering spurs next year. It's a quick seasonal gardening job, but it makes a big difference to keeping a vigorous wisteria manageable.
