REEPHAM: West Lindsey Parish #109 of 128
WEST LINDSEY PARISH #109: REEPHAM Welcome to a village I know so very well. Many people think this is Reep-ham, but it is in fact Reepham – the “ph” in its name forms an “f” sound, trust me, I’m a local! This pronunciation makes a lot of sense when you consider where the name comes from. Reepham was originally “Reeve ham”, and was the residence of the Reeve - a senior official who was the King’s representative at Lincoln. The Reeve’s estate was sizeable and incorporated the area now occupied by the parishes of Fiskerton, Scothern and Barlings as well as Reepham. By the 8th century AD, this area was already thriving. Reepham has continued to grow ever since. By the early medieval period the village had largely developed its present layout. In the 1920s, it was known as “The Frying Pan” to many a local, thanks to its shape. It was elongated at one end, much like a pan handle, whilst the other end was a loop, formed of Station Road, The Green and Smooting Lane. Reepham’s largest growth came in the 19th century when Lincoln was transforming into an industrial centre. Many houses went up for the city’s workers, but Reepham had its own employment opportunities as well. One of these was the Burton Hunt Kennels, and that’s how Kennel Lane in the village gets its name. Reepham once had a railway station, a bakery, and even a co-op in someone’s from room. Let’s see what it has now, in 2023 **** #Reepham, #Lincoln, #Lincolnshire, #WestLindsey, #Reeves, #Farms, #Railways, #Village, #VillageLife, #History, #Kennels, **** Burton Hunt Kennels: https://www.burtonhunt.co.uk/ https://www.burtonhunt.co.uk/the-hunt/ https://www.burtonhunt.co.uk/ http://www.reephamheritage.org/new-pa...
