The Amistad: The Slave Ship Revolt That Reached the Supreme Court (1839)

53 enslaved West Africans rose up against their captors on the Cuban schooner Amistad. Led by Joseph Cinqué, a Mende rice farmer captured in Sierra Leone, the captives killed two crewmembers and seized control of the ship. What followed was one of the most remarkable legal battles in American history.
