[Anchor] Recently in China, cumulonimbus clouds—the kind typically seen in tropical resorts—are said to frequently appear in the dry northern skies. However, storms accompanied by thunder, lightning, and hail have reportedly raged in the regions covered by these clouds. Is this a warning from Mother Nature regarding global warming? Correspondent Kang Jeong-gyu reports from Beijing. [Reporter] White fluffy clouds rise from the blue sky. Passing airplanes, and even man-made cities, look like mere toys. They are taller and more massive than the skyscrapers (Zhongguo Zun) that symbolize Beijing's pride. Passersby stop briefly to take photos at the spectacular sight unfolding on their way home from work. [Beijing Resident: It's an incredibly huge cotton candy cloud. It's amazing!] However, within these clouds that appear soft and fluffy on the outside, tremendous energy is surging. As dusk truly settled, lightning flashed ceaselessly from within the clouds, invisible during the day. Hailstorms also lashed areas such as Chengde and Tangshan in Hebei Province, southeast of Beijing, where the clouds were observed. [Hebei Resident: This isn't fake. It's real hail. Look at the watermelons we're selling. They're all shattered.] These cumulonimbus clouds form when hot air near the surface, heated by the sun, collides with cold air from the upper atmosphere. The problem arises when water droplets piled high in the sky become heavy and pour down to the ground like a waterfall. It inflicts fatal damage on airplanes and ships.] While tropical clouds, typically seen in resorts, unfolding across the arid skies of northern China evoke awe, they may be harboring a warning from Mother Nature regarding global warming.
