How to Create an Even Finish on Your Metal Projects

There are all sorts of blacksmith finishes you can apply to metal, whether a traditional oil finish, beeswax, or spray paint. In this video, I touch on how to create a consistent finish on your metal using oil. Some blacksmiths have a special blacksmith finish recipe, a "slurry" concocted of assorted ingredients. I'm one for simplicity, so I prefer just using one thing. Most of my blacksmith metal finishes on my pieces are simply coconut oil. However, you can do a blacksmith linseed oil finish (or any type of oil finish). Some people also do a metal finish spray paint, but I tend to stray from that option, with the exception of Rustoleum clear coat. If you're going for a more traditional blacksmith iron finish (or a blacksmith black finish for example), I suggest avoiding motor oil, as it is toxic. So besides applying the metal finish, there is a prior step to preparing the metal. As I show, part of the metal finishing process, is preparing the metal via wire wheel. The wire wheel is a crucial part of metal finishing techniques. Thank you for watching this video on metal finishing techniques and blacksmith finishes.
