We Took One Trip and Came Home Ready to Get Rid of Everything
We took the kids on a camper trip, came home to our totally normal three-bedroom house, and stood in the doorway like… why do we own all this stuff? 📦 That one trip kicked off the quiet question underneath all of it: how much of what we own is actually for us — and how much just owns us? In this episode we get way too honest about our family's war on clutter: the plate wall Nick keeps cutting too short (measure twice, cut wrong, apparently), the Ziploc-bag toy rotation that saved our sanity, the Christmas morning our kid couldn't remember a single gift they'd just opened, and the game that got real fast… if the house caught fire, what would you actually grab? (Spoiler: one of us picks old photos, the other picks a grain mill and a jar of wheat berries.) Underneath all the decluttering is the stuff that actually matters: contentment, the parable of the talents and being faithful with a little, why "create more want" is literally someone's job, and what we found on the other side of owning less: more mental space, more presence, and a lot more of each other. Turns out you can't take any of it with you anyway. If your brain feels as cluttered as your junk drawer, this one's for you. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 – Home systems after the camper trip (laundry, etc.) 1:38 – The plate wall (and the math Nick got wrong… twice) 5:25 – Our toy rotation system (Ziploc bags + baskets) 7:12 – How we quietly declutter the kids' stuff 9:18 – What too much stuff actually does to kids 11:04 – The Christmas gift overload problem 13:11 – One gift a day? (a.k.a. mansplaining Hanukkah) 15:19 – How to know when you have too much 17:20 – Shopping your own closet 18:41 – If there's a fire, what do you grab? 22:18 – You can't take it with you (kingdom vs. clutter) 26:07 – Less stuff, less mental load 28:16 – Why do we even want so much? 30:12 – Contentment vs. "create more want" 35:20 – What we're really after: being present 39:17 – Why we're not getting a bigger house 📖 SCRIPTURE & THEMES The Parable of the Talents — Matthew 25:14-30 (faithful with a little) • "Store up treasures in heaven" — Matthew 6:19-21 • Godliness with contentment — 1 Timothy 6:6-8 🌱 ABOUT THROUGH & FOR We're a married couple talking through faith, marriage, parenting, food, and everyday life — the cozy, the chaotic, and the stuff God's teaching us in the middle of it. No polish, no performance, just two people figuring it out and pointing back to the One it's all for. "For everything was created through him and for him." (Colossians 1:16) 🔔 New here?
