I'll take you along the Napoleonic Trail of Rocca d'Anfo, one of the largest Napoleonic-era fortresses in Italy, perched on the mountainside above Lake Idro. A climb steeped in history: from the 14th-century Viscontis, to the rule of the Serenissima, to the dream of Napoleon Bonaparte. A fortress disguised as an abbey to avoid bombardment, a tower disguised as a rock peak, four hundred steps carved into the mountainside to reach the secret heart of the fortress. And a record few places can boast: it was never conquered. Before you leave: visiting the Napoleonic Trail takes about three hours, and the total elevation gain is about 450 meters. It's not to be underestimated: you'll need suitable footwear, water, and a good pace. But I assure you, every step is worth the effort.
