Jamdani has been one of the symbols of Bengal's heritage, culture and craftsmanship for more than 400 years or four centuries. This weaving art, which carries the legacy of the Mughal period, still survives in the weaving villages of Rupganj in Narayanganj. What is about 400 years or more old is the tradition of Jamdani weaving. During the Mughal period, especially in the 17th century, Jamdani developed in Sonargaon, Demra, Rupganj and surrounding areas of Dhaka. In this video, we visited the weaving villages of Kayetpara Union in Rupganj Upazila, where skilled weavers weave the world-famous Dhakai Jamdani sarees with their own hands. We saw the entire process of making a Jamdani saree, the life and struggle of the weavers and their skillful craftsmanship. I also went to the famous Friday Jamdani Hat in Noapara, where one of the largest Jamdani sales in the country gathers since dawn. Sarees brought directly from the looms are sold in this hat. Wholesalers, traders and general buyers from different parts of the country flock to this traditional market. Jamdani is a GI (Geographical Indication) product of Bangladesh and an intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO.
