Dr. Martinez wanted a dog that was exceptionally brave, in the occupation of big game hunting and extremely loyal, willing to protect his human companion. The dogo is a his vision fully realized. The breed was first bred in 1928 using the now extinct Cordoba Fighting Dog and a wide variety of other breeds. Some of the breeds included in the foundation of the dogo are the Great Dane, Boxer, Spanish Mastiff, Great Pyrenees, Irish Wolfhound, and Dogue De Bordeaux. The breed has a storied history in of as a catch dog. The breed is often used to catch wild boar and other nuisance animals. The breed was created to work with other catch and bay dogs.
