(African) Psychology for the confused, Prof. Kopano Ratele
Kopano Ratele is Professor in the Institute for Social & Health Sciences (ISHS) at the University of South Africa (Unisa) where he leads the Transdisciplinary African Psychologies Programme (TAP) and the Research Unit on Men and Masculinities (RUMM). Professor Ratele is also linked to the South African Medical Research Council-UNISA's Violence, Injury & Peace Research Unit. In his presentation titled "African Psychologies for the confused: Implications for teaching, therapy and research", Ratele brings clarity to how to understand African Psychology. He takes it a step further by giving insights into the implications of a plural African psychology for teaching, therapy and research. He argues that some academics and practitioners misread and reduce African psychology to a psychology that studies only Africans which, in his view, is an inaccurate notion of African Psychology. Ratele's talk was part of the the symposium on "Conceiving African in Psychology", hosted by the Trans-Disciplinary African Psychologies Programme at the 1st Pan African Psychology Congress, September 2017.
