“Somos negros. Portugal ainda não dá valor como gente”

The difficult access to housing for Black people and immigrants is a reality. Most, living in this situation, end up building their own homes in illegal neighborhoods, often without electricity or running water. This second installment in the Portuguese-Style Racism series analyzes access to housing, from the search for a home to the informal construction of neighborhoods. Over the next few weeks, we will continue publishing the Portuguese-Style Racism series, every Saturday, covering various topics that provide an insight into racial inequalities in Portugal. The goal is to provide readers with an understanding of institutional and structural racism in Portuguese society. This is the second part of the Portuguese-Style Racism series, which discusses Portuguese colonialism in Africa and focuses on racism against Black people. Justice, housing, employment, education, activism, and the scars of colonialism in Portugal are the areas covered.
