How does a man go from a decade of opioid addiction to the fastest marathoner on the planet over fifty — and what does that actually cost? Ken Rideout's memoir is the story of a working-class kid from Somerville who built an elite Wall Street career, stayed addicted through all of it, and got clean late — then poured that same obsessive wiring into endurance sport. More than ten Ironmans, a Masters Marathon World Championship, and the 155-mile Gobi March across Mongolia, all after fifty. I get into the science of addictive personalities, why exercise is a "socially acceptable" addiction, and the world of ultra running Rideout was competing in. Then I give my honest take — because a book about chasing audacious goals is also a book about what you sacrifice to reach them, and Rideout glosses over more of that than I wanted. My verdict: Read It — a genuinely crazy story with something in it for former addicts, ultra people, and anyone trying to turn their life around.
