Pogrom en Palestine

What is a pogrom? This Russian term, meaning “destruction” or “looting,” refers to organized violence perpetrated by individuals against a community deemed inferior, often with the passive or active complicity of the authorities. Historically, Russian Jews were victims of pogroms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in a context where the state fueled antisemitic hatred to deflect popular anger. Today, Palestinians are subjected to this same logic by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Since October 7, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed, either by the Israeli army or by settlers, with complete impunity. Far from punishing these acts, the Israeli authorities often legitimize them by inverting the narrative: armed settlers become “hikers” who are victims of “terrorists,” while Palestinians are subjected to arbitrary arrests, humiliation, and collective punishment. The examples are numerous: villages terrorized, olive trees uprooted, mosques burned, hospitals raided, pregnant women prevented from giving birth. Yet, the international community, and in particular the European Union, remains silent or merely offers evasive rhetoric, equating oppressors and oppressed. A few Israelis, like former minister Moshe Arens, dare to call these acts “Jewish terrorism.” How can we explain that such systematic violence, perpetrated with complete impunity, can persist without a strong reaction from the international community? To what extent does the Israeli authorities’ inversion of the narrative contribute to normalizing the oppression of the Palestinians?
