He spent the Warsaw Uprising at Sadyba, a district of Warsaw, where he operated as a liaison. It was around this time when he became interested in photography. 'I bought German illustrated magazines - Die Wermacht, Der Adler - about ground forces and aviation. There were excellent black-and-white war photos', Rolke recalls.
