The city-state of Athens stood defiant against the far larger Persian army. Under the command of Miltiades, Athenian hoplites employed a unique and daring tactic: they charged the enemy at a run, wearing full armor. This bold move had never been seen before in Greek warfare. Persian King Darius sought to punish the Athenians for supporting the Ionian revolt in Asia Minor. Determined to make an example of the defiant city-state, he launched a massive campaign across the Aegean. After crushing Eretria, his forces turned toward Athens. The goal was not just retribution—it was to send a clear message to all of Greece about the power of the Persian Empire. On the plains of Marathon, the vastly outnumbered Athenians stood against the might of Persia. This was more than a punitive expedition—it was a clash between imperial domination and the will to remain free. According to legend, a messenger named Pheidippides ran from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens—approximately 40 kilometers—without stopping, to announce the victory.
