REPS DROP OWN STATE POLICE BILL, ADOPT TINUBU’S EXECUTIVE PROPOSAL

Nigeria’s push for state police has entered a new phase after the House of Representatives withdrew its earlier State Police Bill in favor of the Executive Bill submitted by President Bola Tinubu. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said the president's proposal is more comprehensive and contains stronger safeguards to prevent abuse, protect human rights, and ensure accountability. The bill was developed by a committee chaired by the president's chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Although the House plans to fast-track the legislation, lawmakers insist it will still undergo public hearings and full legislative scrutiny before any final vote. The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to establish state police services to complement the Nigeria Police Force in tackling terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, communal violence, and other security challenges. It also introduces strict conditions for states seeking to create police services while maintaining federal oversight to prevent political interference. If approved by two-thirds of the National Assembly and ratified by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly, the bill will establish Nigeria’s first dual policing system since the country's return to democratic rule in 1999.
