Her 2‑year‑old daughter Nicole survived in the house for two days without medication, tending to her mother’s wounds. The killer left a small bloodstain on a washcloth — DNA that produced no match in CODIS and the case grew cold for decades. In 2019 Parabon NanoLabs ran the washcloth DNA through consumer genealogy databases and produced distant cousin leads — but the matches were so far removed investigators were told the case was effectively unsolvable. A volunteer genealogist named Liz took the file in 2021 and spent 3.5 years working more than 1,500 distant cousin matches in her spare time. Her persistence narrowed the field to a single family line. In August 2023 detectives confronted Stephan Smerk at his home in Niskayuna, New York. He volunteered a DNA swab, then phoned Fairfax County detectives to turn himself in. Smerk confessed and gave details only the killer would know. Forensic testing later matched his DNA to the washcloth with statistical certainty. In 2025 Smerk pleaded guilty and received a lengthy sentence, finally giving Robin’s family—and Nicole—some measure of justice after nearly three decades.
