Wild Camping on an Ancient Irish Sea Bed

Today I am back on one of Leitrim’s high ridges - Slieve Anierin In this video, I navigate a route that feels like stepping back through deep geological time to an ancient sea My goal was to locate a specific glacial rocking stone mentioned in old documents— a feature that seems to have vanished from modern records — but the true interest of this ridge lies in the layers of history—both human and prehistoric—that define the landscape As I climbed, it was hard to ignore the reality that these wind-swept heights were once submerged beneath a warm, ancient sea 300 million years ago. Finding exposed "Crow Coal" seams along the ridge provided a quiet, tangible link to that era, and the people who used to rely on it to survive the harsh Irish winters Highlights include: • Traditional land navigation: Plotting the route and a short section of pacing practise to keep up the skill • Geological exploration: Examining the coal seams and the evidence of the ancient sea • Wild camping: A peaceful solo night on the ridge • Local history: Reflecting on the industrial past of these high, remote slopes If you enjoy slow-paced Irish hiking adventures, traditional navigation, and discovering the history hidden in our hills, check out my playlist here:    • Leitrim: Hidden Gems of the North West   #WildCampIreland #Leitrim #HikingIreland #TraditionalNavigation #WildCamping #IrishGeology #SoloHiking
