While the significant drawback was that farming was difficult due to blocked sunlight, an alternative has emerged that involves installing greenhouses beneath the generators to cultivate customized crops, drawing considerable interest. Reporter Kim Geun-woo reports. [Reporter] Large-scale solar panels have been installed across a vast field. Below is a glass greenhouse, and inside, "Ophiopogon japonicus," a specialty crop used as a medicinal herb, is growing. It can generate enough electricity to power 1,000 four-person households for a year, while also generating revenue from the crops. It has effectively killed two birds with one stone: farming and electricity production. [Kim Seong-hoon / CEO of an Agri-solar Power Company: We calculated the amount of sunlight required for the crops and adopted a method of installing modules at a distance corresponding to that specific amount of sunlight.] As the demand for renewable energy increases, agri-solar power utilizing farmland has garnered attention. However, it was often shunned in rural areas due to concerns that generators could block sunlight and ruin crops. Then, last month, a bill establishing the legal basis for agricultural solar power was passed, and the foundation for expansion is being laid as technologies to overcome limitations, such as utilizing greenhouses, are being developed.
