My first video on youtube If you are in Class 11 or 12 and planning an engineering career in India — JEE is the exam that will define where you end up. But most students spend months preparing without actually understanding what JEE is, how it works, and what the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced actually is. This video covers everything from scratch. JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. It is India's national level engineering entrance exam and one of the most competitive exams in the world. Around 13 to 14 lakh students appear every year. Only a few thousand make it to IITs. JEE is conducted in two completely separate stages — JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Many students think they are the same exam. They are not. JEE Main is the first stage. It is conducted by NTA — National Testing Agency — twice a year. Session 1 happens in January and Session 2 in April. JEE Main 2026 Session 1 was held from January 21 to 30 and Session 2 from April 2 to 9. Through JEE Main score you get admission into NITs, IIITs and other Government Funded Technical Institutions. There are 1729 participating colleges accepting JEE Main scores across India. JEE Main Paper 1 is for BTech. It has three sections — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Total 300 marks. Duration 3 hours. Exam mode is computer based. There is no age limit for JEE Main. No limit on number of attempts either. You just need to have passed or be appearing in Class 12 with Physics Chemistry and Maths. Application fee is 1000 rupees for general category. Exam is conducted in 13 languages including Hindi and English. JEE Main gives you a percentile score not raw marks. 99 percentile means you scored better than 99 percent of all students who appeared. For top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal — you generally need 98 plus percentile for CSE. For other branches and colleges the cutoff is lower. JEE Advanced is the second stage and this is the IIT exam. Not everyone can appear. Only the top 2.5 lakh students from JEE Main are eligible to register for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced 2026 was conducted by IIT Roorkee on May 17, 2026. Every year one of the seven old IITs gets the responsibility — IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee rotate in turn. To be eligible for JEE Advanced you need to be in the top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main plus 75 percent marks in Class 12 or top 20 percentile in your board — whichever is lower. SC and ST students need 65 percent. You only get 2 attempts at JEE Advanced and they must be in consecutive years. JEE Advanced 2026 result was declared on June 1, 2026. After result comes JoSAA counselling — Joint Seat Allocation Authority. This is where IIT seats are actually allotted. 23 IITs and IISc Bangalore all participate in JoSAA 2026. Courses available include BTech, BS, BArch, dual degree BTech MTech and integrated MSc. The biggest difference in simple words — JEE Main gets you into NITs, IIITs and state government colleges. JEE Advanced gets you into IITs. You cannot skip JEE Main and go directly to JEE Advanced. JEE Main is the gate.
