Our destination is Chimney Top on the North Fork Mountain Trail, where an intense 2.7-mile climb gains roughly 2,100 feet of elevation before reaching what may be one of the most incredible views in West Virginia. After finding a last-minute campsite at Seneca Shadows Campground, we raced to set up the teardrop and reach the trail before afternoon storms and fading daylight caught up with us. The climb was relentless, the skies were dramatic, and Juniper and I ended up having the mountaintop almost entirely to ourselves. The view from Chimney Top was worth every step—but the adventure was far from over. During the steep hike back down, I slipped on the rocky trail, injured my hand, and had to use my first-aid kit for the first time. Thankfully, the injury was minor, and we made it back to the Jeep just before dark. Back at camp, we settled into the teardrop for a well-earned dinner, a celebratory drink, and an unexpected encounter with the largest and most intimidating moth I have ever seen. This episode includes teardrop camping near Seneca Rocks, hiking with my dog, dramatic Appalachian scenery, a difficult West Virginia mountain trail, and an unforgettable view from the top of Chimney Top.
