Kehancha: The chaotic border town and headquarters of Kuria land nobody talks about in Migori county
Kehancha is a town in Kenya, located in Migori County, in southwestern Kenya. On 15 February 2023, Kehancha was officially elevated to the status of a municipality, becoming the fourth municipality in Migori County alongside Migori, Rongo and Awendo. The municipal area covers about 171.3 km² and according to the 2019 census has a population of 100,433 persons. The town lies in the region inhabited predominantly by the Kuria people (sometimes called Abakuria), along the Kenya–Tanzania border. Agriculture remains a key livelihood, with many engaging in cropping (such as maize, beans, sweet potatoes, vegetables) and livestock trade (though cattle/goat trade has been hampered by rustling). Kehancha’s economic profile is diverse and evolving: Agriculture: As noted above, both subsistence and commercial farming are present. Mining: The area has seen increased interest in gold exploration and mining, which has driven land‐price increases and raised concerns about land grabbing and environmental risk. Infrastructure Development: With municipality status, the town is now eligible for enhanced infrastructure funding from agencies such as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), World Bank and United Nations urban programmes. Transport & Accessibility: The road network to and around Kehancha has seen upgrades, with key roads between Kehancha–Migori and Kehancha–Isebania being tarmacked, improving travel times and opening up business opportunities. Despite progress, Kehancha faces several challenges: Water & Sanitation: The existing water supply system was designed for 300 m³/day but produces only around 210-240 m³/day, lagging behind actual demand; there is no sewerage system and many residents rely on pit latrines. Security & Crime: There have been reports of rising insecurity in the town, including armed robberies and illegal mining activity, which affect business confidence and overall safety. Land Pressure: The discovery of gold has brought a rush of miners and speculative land acquisition, driving up land prices (an acre reportedly more than doubled in price within a year) and posing risks to schools and infrastructure from mining tunnelling. Kehancha is at an interesting juncture: As a new municipality, it has increased institutional capacity and access to development funding, which can be leveraged to upgrade infrastructure and services. Its strategic location near the Kenya–Tanzania border and proximity to trade routes (including the Isebania border and access toward the Maasai Mara corridor) gives it potential as a commercial hub. The local culture of the Kuria people, combined with natural assets and land resources, suggest potential for tourism, agribusiness, and light industry, if well managed. In summary, Kehancha is a growing municipality in Migori County that reflects many of Kenya’s evolving urban-peripheral towns: positioned between tradition and rapid change, endowed with agriculture and mining potential, but facing infrastructure, governance and social‐security challenges. The elevation to municipality status marks a milestone, and much will depend on how local leadership and stakeholders harness the opportunities while managing the risks. #iam_marwa #migori #iammarwa #deemwango #kenyatravel #kenya #homabay #kisumu #kisumucity #tanzania #africa #kisiinews #viral
