As part of the EUniWell Open Lecture Series, Prof. Maria Cristina Polidori spoke on the topic “ Principles of Ageing Medicine for the rapidly changing society of the 21st century” on 14 October 2025. Lecturers: Prof. Maria Cristina Polidori, Senior Physician and Professor and Head of Ageing Clinical Research at the Dpt. II for Internal Medicine, Cologne University Hospital in Germany About the lecturer: M. Cristina Polidori is Full Professor and Head of Ageing Clinical Research at the Department II of Internal Medicine, Cologne University Hospital. A specialist in Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Internal Medicine, she has held fellowships at Harvard University, the EU Marie Curie Program, and the Robert Bosch Foundation. She is President Elect of the German Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and serves on the Academic Board of the European Geriatric Medicine Society. Her research on person-centered medicine and healthy centenarians has earned her several honors, including an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London. About this lecture: This lecture offers an introduction to the historical, epidemiological, and healthcare-related dimensions of demographic transition, with a particular emphasis on healthy life expectancy and ageing well. Participants will explore the key drivers of demographic change, the interplay between ethics, One Health, and planetary health in shaping societal well-being, and the complex, multifactorial nature of ageing. The lecture also examines the relationship between biological and chronological age, the lifelong process of ageing, and the role of geroscience, ageing medicine, and geriatrics. In addition, it introduces the main technologies applied in ageing medicine, the concepts of frailty and intrinsic capacity, and preventive measures aimed at maintaining function, quality of life, and well-being across the life course.
