In 2024, Itaú Unibanco revised its ESG strategy and placed the climate agenda at the center of everything. In an interview with VEJA+Verde, Luciana Nicola, the bank's Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability, explains that the challenge lies not in the institution's own emissions, but in what it finances. “Our scope 1 and 2 emissions are 700 times smaller than scope 3, which is what I finance. If my client isn't net zero (carbon neutral), I will never be net zero,” says Nicola. To advance on this front, the bank offers credit lines with incentives for interest rates and terms for regenerative agriculture practices, as well as advisory services to help clients define their own decarbonization goals. Luciana also talks about Bike Itaú — a pioneering urban mobility project now present in cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo — and the bank's participation in the UN Global Compact.
