In the final moments of the 19th century, Julius Popper (Jorge Perugorría), a former Romanian engineer who took possession of Tierra del Fuego in 1860 on behalf of Queen Carmen Sybla, stands before the Cathedral of Santiago and recounts the details of his life and how he ended up poor, old, and ruined. Julius Popper, like the other characters in his story, came to Tierra del Fuego in search of gold and the life that wealth brings. Instead, the desire for wealth and power and the inability to control their passions led them in another direction, all against the backdrop of the pristine Tierra del Fuego region and at the cost of the lives of the island's native inhabitants. Brazil Reviews: I hope this wonderful Chilean film finds a distributor in the United States. I saw it at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood. I had never heard of the director before. The themes are rather banal: the corrosive and ultimately destructive influence of power and megalomania on a seemingly stable personality; the devastating effect of European colonizers on the Indians; the frontier as a haven for all manner of misfits, adventurers, loners, and psychopaths. There are obvious influences from films like "Aguirre: The Wrath of the Dead" and "Viridiana." Yet, it all works, and very well. This film definitely deserves a wider audience than arthouse theaters and film clubs.
