He wrote the song about a spiritual experience atop Solsbury Hill in Somerset, England after his departure from the progressive rock band Genesis, of which he had been the lead vocalist since its inception. This song holds a very special place in my heart. Everything about it is truly outstanding from the mystical lyrics, 7/4 time structure, simple instrumentation and vocal performance. Its a masterpiece of songwriting in my opinion. I've performed / recorded it many times and I think I will always keep coming back to it in some way either internally or externally. So very moving, spiritual and inspirational. I felt this was a really solid performance and reflects my current interpretation much better than the previous version I released here many years ago.
