The title of this classical master piece is "King Chu doffs his armour" (Ba Wang Xie Jia), from traditional repertoire for pipa solo. About the music: according to Liu Fang, there are different versions for this piece according the schools and styles of individual performers. This is the version of Wei Zhongle (1909--1998), one of the great pipa masters from the last century; it is very different from the version of Master Lin Chicheng(1922--2006). These differences are very natural for Chinese music from the classical literati tradition (In fact, the differences are expected, not the "sameness" as far as the soul of the music plays a role, see http://www.philmultic.com/English/Chi... ) The whole piece consisted of three major parts: the first part is very rhythmic and powerful with the same melody repeatedly played on variations of techniques, depicting the tension of preparing the battle, until one couldn't "breath" at the climax the music suddenly stopped and a silence set in. Then the second part begin with haunting melodies depicting the feeling of the King when he realized that he couldn't turn the tide. His beloved concubine committed suicide with the thought of free him from the "burden" of taking care of her. The music for the scene of "farewell to my concubine" is particularly heart-breaking. ... The final part is a relaxing melody when the battle was over, and soldiers went back home. The king Chu committed suicide himself after lost the battle and his beloved concubine Yuji. The pipa has four strings and 30 frets, and is often referred to as Chinese lute or the Flamenco guitar of China, though the playing techniques are quite different.
