Managing Whole Class Behavior with a Happy/Sad Board -Elementary Art Class Management Strategy
In this video, I’m sharing one of my most effective whole-class behavior management strategies for K-6 art classes: the Happy/Sad Board. I’m Katie Jarvis, an experienced elementary art teacher with 22 years of classroom experience, and this method has been a game-changer in my art room. I’ll walk you through how I use the Happy/Sad Board to encourage positive behavior throughout the class. From the moment students enter the art room, they have the opportunity to earn points by coming in quietly, reciting the art room rules, listening well, focusing on their art projects, and following clean-up instructions. Each of these actions earns points that contribute toward their goal of winning either a gold or silver paintbrush to take back to their classroom. I also share additional ways students can gain or lose points, providing a clear and consistent structure that helps maintain a productive and respectful environment in the art room. If you’re looking for a simple yet powerful tool to manage whole-class behavior, this video will show you how to implement the Happy/Sad Board effectively in your own classroom.
