Malignant Hyperthermia Crisis Management in Anaesthesia - Vapor-Clean Filter Introduction. Newer anaesthesia gas machines contain plastic and elastomeric components that absorb volatile anaesthetics and then release residual vapor during subsequent anaesthetic procedures. The anaesthesia gas machine requires high flows and a lengthy time period to remove most of the vapour before the machine can be used for a patient that cannot tolerate breathing trace amounts of volatile anaesthetic vapour. The Vapor-Clean filters absorb the trace amounts of anaesthetic vapour (isoflurane, sevoflurane and desflurane) so that anaesthetic vapours do not reach the patient. Placement of the Vapor-Clean filter canisters on the anaesthesia machine allows the machine to be immediately vapour-free (less than 5 parts per million of vapour). The data plot at right shows concentration of anaesthetic vapor in an Ohmeda Aestiva anaesthesia machine after the machine was used to deliver isoflurane at 1 MAC for 2 hours. Without the Vapor-Clean, it took over 60 minutes of flushing the machine at 10 L/minute before the vapor emitted by the machine was safely below 5 parts per million. Under the same conditions, when using the Vapor-Clean filters, the machine was ready in less than 2 minutes..
