["If I die with Park Yeol, I will be satisfied."] A Japanese woman who volunteered to be an accomplice to a Japanese judge, asking to be punished alongside independence activist Park Yeol. 'Kaneko Fumiko' engaged in active anti-Japanese struggles, including plotting to assassinate the Japanese Emperor alongside her husband, the martyr Park Yeol. In recognition of her contributions, she was posthumously awarded the title of Meritorious Person of Independence in 2018, becoming the second Japanese person to receive this honor. Born in 1903, Fumiko spent seven years in Bugang-myeon, Sejong City, during her teenage years when her identity was being established. This is the site of the house where Ms. Fumiko lived. At that time, Japanese people who had crossed over to Korea lived in this vicinity. Although she left Japan to come to Korea due to an unfortunate family history, she grew up suffering abuse, treated little better than a maid even at her aunt's house. Despite her difficult circumstances, Fumiko graduated from Bugang Public Elementary School and Higher Elementary School with excellent grades. She subsequently returned to Japan and continued her studies on her own for several years. During this process, she joined forces with Korean independence activists, such as Park Yeol, to wage an anti-Japanese struggle. After witnessing the oppression of Koreans being brutally beaten, she felt, 'Ah, this isn't how Japan should be; we need to change this.'"] Fumiko was detained by the police under the pretext of protective custody during the Great Kanto Earthquake, but was sentenced to death after her plans to assassinate the Japanese Emperor were revealed. As she underwent investigation, Fumiko’s resentment toward the Japanese imperial regime grew even stronger. Although she was offered the chance to renounce her beliefs, she flatly refused, ultimately dying a martyr in prison. She passed away in 1926 at the tender age of 23.
