The Gospel of John: The One Word He Used 36 Times But Most People Miss

The Gospel of John uses the word life 36 times, and John is not using it as vague inspiration, religious improvement, or a simple way to talk about heaven after death. John tells us why he wrote: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31). Once you see how John develops this one word, the famous stories stop standing alone. Cana, Nicodemus, the woman at the well, the healing at Bethesda, the bread in the wilderness, the man born blind, and Lazarus at the tomb all become part of one unified witness. John is showing that Jesus does not merely explain life, improve life, or point toward life from a distance. Life is in Him. That is why John begins before the miracles with the words, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Before Jesus gives life, John says life is already located in the Word. That life shines into darkness, confronts religious confidence, exposes Scripture knowledge that refuses to come to Christ, and reaches its climactic picture when Jesus stands before Lazarus’ tomb and says, “I am the resurrection and the life.” The question John presses is not whether Jesus is familiar, inspiring, or historically interesting. The question is whether we are coming to the Son of God for life, or trying to find life in religion, knowledge, morality, control, comfort, or self-improvement. If John is right, the deepest human need is not a better version of the life we already have. It is life from Christ Himself. 📖 KEY VERSE John 20:31 — “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” IN THIS VIDEO ▸ How John’s 36 uses of life form one unified witness to Jesus ▸ Why John 20:31 gives the purpose of the whole Gospel ▸ What John means when he says, “In Him was life” ▸ Why life in John is more than happiness, success, or religious activity ▸ How life and light reveal Jesus in a darkened world ▸ Why Nicodemus needed birth from above, not more religious knowledge ▸ How eternal life is tied to the lifted-up Son in John 3 ▸ Why John 5 warns against reading Scripture while refusing Christ ▸ How Lazarus becomes the climactic sign that Jesus is resurrection and life Where are you most tempted to look for life apart from Christ?
