What actually happened was that four nations got locked in the same damp house, handed a single passport, and told to get along forever. They never did. The rest of the world thinks the British are one thing: one accent, one flag, one creature that apologises to furniture and boils its vegetables until they surrender. But the moment you arrive on the island, that single creature splinters into four, and the four cannot stand each other. The English, convinced everywhere beyond the M25 is a lovely little outbuilding. The Scots, defining themselves almost entirely by not being English, loudly, on principle. The Welsh, seething quietly at being forgotten. And Northern Ireland, carrying a weight the other three would rather not name at the dinner table.
