Safety & Security Town Hall | @somsdk12
This virtual town hall on the district's safety takes a closer look at how the South Orange & Maplewood School District is strengthening safety and security across its schools while keeping the student experience front and center. Community members and school leaders came together as Paul Morgan shared updates on recent progress, including stronger emergency preparedness, closer coordination with local law enforcement, and the rollout of systems like behavioral threat assessments and the StopIt app, which gives students and families a way to report concerns anonymously. There are also practical changes inside school buildings, especially a focus on front-door security, including retraining staff to create a more consistent and welcoming presence. The district is clear that safety goes beyond procedures. There is a continued emphasis on building a supportive environment through strong relationships, community connection, and social-emotional learning, ensuring students feel both safe and supported every day. The School District of South Orange & Maplewood proudly serves around 7,000 students across ten schools, including one early childhood center, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Columbia High School – New Jersey's first high school. The district creates a learner-centered environment that offers multiple pathways for academic success through reimagined structures, support, and innovative instructional methods for all students.
