Piedimonte Matese è un comune della provincia di Caserta nella regione italiana della Campania, situato a circa 82 km a nord di Napoli e a circa 40 km a nord di Caserta. The archaeological finds (lithic weapons and terracottas) and the remains of the megalithic walls testify to a human presence in the area since the Neolithic age. Mount Cila, on the slopes of which the current inhabited center stands, hosted a settlement in the Samnite era . Among the archaeological remains discovered are the Corridore del Cila and the Zeus del Cila , two ancient statuettes preserved in the Raffaele Marrocco civic museum together with 170 other finds from the Monte Cila area. In the 9th century the first inhabited center of Piedimonte was formed, close around the small church of San Giovanni and located in a dominant position overlooking the Alifana plain and the Volturno valley . At that time the small village depended on the Lombard counts of Alife . During the 9th and 10th centuries the population of the small settlement increased thanks to the refugees coming from the Alifan plain, devastated by the Saracen incursions . In this period the village of Vallata was also formed which in the following centuries, thanks to urban expansion, would join that of S. Giovanni forming a single town. In the 10th century, the existence of the hamlet of Sepicciano is also documented, which later became a hamlet of Piedimonte.
