Depersonalization and derealization are a combination of symptoms in which you feel detached or have a dream like experience that includes unusual reactions to yourself and to your surroundings. People describe these experiences as feeling outside of their body or feeling as if everything is distorted, or foggy, clouded, or unreal. Depersonalization is the feeling of unreality and detachment from your the sense of self, your emotions, your thoughts memories and physical sensations. Derealization is the sense of unreality and detachment with the external world. People have unique ways of describing dpdr and often use metaphors like they are inside a bubble or in a dream like world or viewing the world behind glass where they just donโt feel the same connection with themselves, others or the world around them. Itโs also common that people feel a certain emotional numbing affecting both positive and negative emotions and feel that their actions are more robotic like they are spectators or on auto pilot as they move through their day. People also describe a cognitive numbing or use the phrase brain fog to describe how itโs difficult to concentrate and get tasks completed. But their symptoms are internal to them, and not noticeable by other people. Dpdr can occur alone on its own or it can occur in combination with other mental health conditions. People with dpdr can experience high levels of anxiety including panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, a fear of being alone and intense anxiety in social situations.
